Reads Stores

Linda and Gerald Read own and operate this charming convenience store in the famous village of Mortehoe, on the North Devon coast. The shop is picturesquely located on the main street in Mortehoe and has a largeMortehoe and adequate stock of items for both residents and holiday makers to the Mortehoe and Woolacombe area. Mortehoe, Devon is an incredibly beautiful location and much of it is owned by the National Trust. The area is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

This area is famous both for its early history and its later and more notorious history. Mortehoe was listed in the Doomsday Book along with Woolacome which is less than a mile away, with Mortehoe being just a farm, and Woolacombe being uninhabited but later a Manor. The population was Mortehoe as late as 1801 was just 254. In its later history it became notorious for smugglers and wreckers with the Morte Slates found locally producing distinctive rock with razor edges. Over 5 ships went down in 1851 on Morte Stone - a jagged reef and stacks off Morte Point.

Famous in Mortehoe is St. Mary’s Church, which was built in the early 13th century, with the tower added in 1270. A walk around the churchyard shows some graves of sailors from earlier wrecked ships.
